Professional Biohazard Waste Disposal

Professional Biohazard Waste Disposal. Biohazard waste disposal is a process that involves the safe, sanitary handling and treatment of infectious, or potentially infectious, materials.  It’s important to note that biohazard waste disposal is different from hazardous waste disposal. A biohazardous material can be hazardous but not vice versa. For example, a mercury thermometer isn’t a biohazard, but it can be disposed of as a hazardous waste.

Biohazardous Waste Disposal Methods

There are a number of safe ways to dispose of biohazardous waste. One way is to contact Healthcare Waste Management who specializes in proper biohazard waste disposal. We offer a complete range of eco-friendly and sustainable services for your medical waste disposal needs. We can pick up the waste at your location and treat it at our facility.

There are three disposal methods we use in our treatment plants.

  1. Autoclave – Autoclaving makes use of pressure and steam heat to sterilize specific types of medical waste. Autoclaving is specifically effective when dealing with microorganisms such as infectious bacteria and viruses and a popular method for medical waste such as sharps and medical equipment and tools. The autoclave process involves a closed chamber, and the infectious items are placed inside where they are exposed to extremely high temperatures.
  2. Microwave – Microwave treatment of medical waste is like autoclaving medical waste, as they both use high temperatures to penetrate and decontaminate medical waste. There are microwave systems that first shred the medical waste and then process it through an automated enclosed system until it is disinfected and comes out the other end, ready for compaction or disposal. Like Autoclaving medical waste, one of the major benefits of microwaving is, it is a clean process and no emission of any gases or residuals are created.
  3. Chemical Treatment – Chemical treatment of medical waste is best thought of as it is like a washing machine. The EPA identifies chemical processing as the most appropriate method to treat liquid medical waste.
