Low Income Healthcare Clinics

For uninsured patients in the Aurora area there are clinics such as VNA Healthcare on Highland. VNA Health Care is a patient-centered, not-for-profit healthcare provider, serving over 72,000 patients a year. VNA is located through-out Illinois wil a couple of offices in Illinois. Then there is Aunt Martha’s Community Health center on Ogden Ave. They provide family health care, psychiatry and counseling, OBGYN and more with a sliding scale payment method available.  While Aunt Martha’s does accept walk ins, it is recommended to call ahead for an appointment.

Hospitals of Auroraaurora medical waste disposal

Aurora has two hospitals, AMITA Health Mercy Medical Center on North Highland Ave and Rush Copley Medical Center on Ogden. These two hospitals along with Dreyer Medical Clinic employ more than 4,500 people in the city making the healthcare industry one of the biggest employers in Aurora. Rush Copley has 210 beds and has a cancer center along with a neuroscience center. Their emergency center sees over 70,000 patients every year. As you can imagine, all of these wonderful hospitals generate a lot of medical waste.

Minimizing Our Impact

Although medical waste disposal is an inevitability it doesn’t have to be expensive and it does not have to have a large impact on the environment. One of the main ways we cut our costs down is by owning our own processing plants. A lot of medical waste disposal companies are actually just haulers, they just transport your waste to a third party disposal facility which raises their overhead and lowers their control of your service. Not only does us owning our own facilities save you money, it lets us choose the most efficient and green disposal techniques. Another Earth friendly tactic we employ is reusable medical and sharps disposal containers – drastically cutting down the amount of plastic thrown in landfills.

Aurora Medical Waste FAQ and Related Searches

What is Medical Waste?

Medical waste is healthcare trash that contains infectious or potentially infectious items. It can come from hospitals, medical clinics, veterinary offices, dental clinics, research facilities, or medical laboratories. It can contain blood or other bodily fluids, or it can appear benign, like gloves or gowns.

According to the Medical Waste Tracking Act of 1988, it’s defined as any waste created during treatment, testing, immunization, research, or diagnosis of human beings and animals. Examples include sharps like scalpels or needles, tissue, fluids, glassware, swabs, culture dishes, or bandages.

What are some Examples of Medical Waste?
  • Expired vaccines
  • Tissue from humans or animals
  • Gowns, gloves, or gauze that may have blood on them
  • Waste from rooms of patients with infectious diseases
  • Needles, scalpels, and broken glass used in procedures
  • Laboratory cultures, stocks, and contaminated culture paraphernalia
  • Bedding from infected animals
What are the types of medical waste?

The WHO identifies the 8 categories of medical waste as:

  • Infectious waste
  • Sharps waste
  • Pathological waste
  • Chemical waste
  • Cytotoxic waste
  • Pharmaceutical waste
  • Radioactive waste
  • Nonhazardous general waste

Those types cover all the potential varieties and sources of regulated and non-regulated healthcare waste.

Who generates medical waste?

You know hospitals and doctor’s offices create medical waste. But blood banks, dental clinics, and urgent care clinics create it too. Pharmacies, veterinary clinics, medical testing labs, research labs, nursing homes, hotels where patients stay, and funeral homes also create regulated waste.

Even an office building can generate biohazardous waste. Why? Because if someone gets a nosebleed at work and uses a tissue to stop it, they’ve created regulated waste. There was a hotel in Boston, next door to Mass General Hospital, was fined twice for medical waste violations from hotel guests.
