Healthcare Waste Management has its headquarters in Gary, Indiana. If you are looking for a medical waste disposal service in Gary, look no further. We provide medical waste, infectious waste, biohazard waste and sharps container disposal services in Gary. One of our medical waste processing plants is in Gary on West 9th Avenue. We not only pick up your medical waste, we are the haulers, we own the trucks that transport your waste and the medical waste processing plants that destroy your waste. It may surprise you to find out, in many instances you will find medical waste disposal companies that do not pick up your waste, haul your waste and most importantly do not destroy your waste. I am not sure how you can be an expert or top-quality provider in this industry if you rely on so many other companies to do the work. Working with Healthcare Waste Management it is like working directly with the supplier. Our employees, our trucks, our insurance and our medical waste processing plants. We feel as a provider of this service, to ensure quality measures are followed and for us to offer the most cost-effective services, we had to own the entire process. The more companies trying to make thier margins on your bill, the more it is going to cost you. Those are just a few of the reasons we do it all.

"The main reason is to provide you with the highest quality service at the most affordable price."

Hospitals in Gary

Gary Indiana is unique in its production of medical waste as there are only two hospitals in all of Gary, Methodist Hospitals main campus and their sister campus in Midlake. Also, by law, Methodist Hospitals cannot leave Gary. In the 70s Methodist attempted to leave Gary and transfer their hospital to Merrilville. These days Methodist legally cannot leave Gary and must provide equal services to all of their hospitals. Along with that, the Office of Civil Rights has to approve any investments coming into their hospitals.

Low Cost Service

The economic hardships of Gary are no secret. Eighteen percent of the population has no health insurance at all, and a large majority of the rest are on Medicare or Medicaid. These reasons make it extra important for Methodist to save as much money as they can without sacrificing their standards of care. Our services help you reduce the waste and cost associated with your medical waste disposal needs by ensuring you have to proper containers and your employees have the proper training. Healthcare Waste Management uses industry leading reusable sharps containers and reusable medical waste containers, fuel efficient trucks and well-planned intelligent routing to not only keep costs down, but also lessen your impact on the environment. This of course is important for any area, but especially important for the Gary area as it is regularly reported as one of the most polluted cities in the United States.

Trustworthy and Reliable

Hospitals are not the only medical facilities in Gary, however. As mentioned above a large amount of the people in Gary either do not have insurance or are on Medicare/Medicaid. This makes low cost healthcare options extra important, and thankfully there is the Community HealthNet Health Center on 5th Ave which provides medical, dental and behavioral services for all people regardless of their ability to pay. We at HWM are not just medical waste transporters who act as middle men between your facility and a separate processing plant and charge you a premium for the pleasure. We own everything from the trucks to the waste processing plant, we aren't just middle men here to make a profit off of communities that truly need help.

Gary Interesting Information

Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States, 25 miles from downtown Chicago, Illinois. Gary is adjacent to the Indiana Dunes National Park and borders southern Lake Michigan. Gary was named after lawyer Elbert Henry Gary, who was the founding chairman of the United States Steel Corporation. The city is known for its large steel mills, and as the birthplace of the Jackson 5 music group.

Once the second largest city in Indiana, the population of Gary was 80,294 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in the state of Indiana. It was a prosperous city from the 1920s through the mid-1960s due to its booming steel industry, but overseas competition and restructuring of the steel industry resulted in a decline and a severe loss of jobs.

What is Medical Waste?

Medical waste is healthcare trash that contains infectious or potentially infectious items. It can come from hospitals, medical clinics, veterinary offices, dental clinics, research facilities, or medical laboratories. It can contain blood or other bodily fluids, or it can appear benign, like gloves or gowns.

According to the Medical Waste Tracking Act of 1988, it’s defined as any waste created during treatment, testing, immunization, research, or diagnosis of human beings and animals. Examples include sharps like scalpels or needles, tissue, fluids, glassware, swabs, culture dishes, or bandages.

What are some Examples of Medical Waste?
  • Expired vaccines
  • Tissue from humans or animals
  • Gowns, gloves, or gauze that may have blood on them
  • Waste from rooms of patients with infectious diseases
  • Needles, scalpels, and broken glass used in procedures
  • Laboratory cultures, stocks, and contaminated culture paraphernalia
  • Bedding from infected animals
What are the types of medical waste?

The WHO identifies the 8 categories of medical waste as:

  • Infectious waste
  • Sharps waste
  • Pathological waste
  • Chemical waste
  • Cytotoxic waste
  • Pharmaceutical waste
  • Radioactive waste
  • Nonhazardous general waste

Those types cover all the potential varieties and sources of regulated and non-regulated healthcare waste.

Who generates medical waste?

You know hospitals and doctor’s offices create medical waste. But blood banks, dental clinics, and urgent care clinics create it too. Pharmacies, veterinary clinics, medical testing labs, research labs, nursing homes, hotels where patients stay, and funeral homes also create regulated waste.

Even an office building can generate biohazardous waste. Why? Because if someone gets a nosebleed at work and uses a tissue to stop it, they’ve created regulated waste. There was a hotel in Boston, next door to Mass General Hospital, was fined twice for medical waste violations from hotel guests.
