In 1852 the town was named Council Bluffs. It was a major outfitting point on the Missouri River for the Emigrant Trail and Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Council Bluffs also entertained a lively steamboat trade. The city has always seemed to thrive from transportation or better said people traveling through. From the street peddler days where everyone but the people passing through, were there to make money (from the people passing through). To a more present time when Council Bluffs was the fifth largest rail center in the nation. As we hit the late 20th century and a restructuring of the railroad industry caused a loss of many jobs and the restructuring of heavy industry. Many jobs moved offshore. Caused Council Bluffs to seek a new economy.

Council Bluffs is a city in and the county seat of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, United States. The city is the most populous in Southwest Iowa and is a primary city of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area. It is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, across from the city of Omaha. Council Bluffs was known, until at least 1853, as Kanesville. It was the historic starting point of the Mormon Trail. Kanesville is also the northernmost anchor town of the other emigrant trails, since there was a steam-powered boat to ferry their wagons, and cattle, across the Missouri River.
