How to Handle Medical Waste

Time needed: 30 minutes.

How to handle medical waste.
If you work in an industry where you are exposed to blood / body fluids, there are a list of requirements and guidelines you should follow.

  1. Get the HBV Vaccination

The standard requires employers to offer the
vaccination series to all workers who have
    occupational exposure.

  2. Read and understand your employer’s
    Exposure Control Plan.

The Exposure Control Plan identifies and classifies jobs and tasks where occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material may occur.

  3. Use Best Management Practices

Hand washing is one of the most important practices and easiest
ways to prevent exposure. Dispose of used sharps promptly
into an appropriate sharps disposal container. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) every time there is a
potential for exposure to blood or body fluids. Clean work surfaces with germicidal products.
