The Chippewa peoples were prominent traders in their area, facilitating trades between the French fur traders and other tribes in the region.
By the 20th century Duluth had become the busiest trading port in the whole United States. In fact in the very early 1900s Duluth became home to the most millionaires per capita out of any state in the country. Many Finnish people moved to Duluth due to the large European population and number of jobs available. Due to this Duluth has the largest population of Finns outside of Finland. After the decline of American manufacturing hit Duluth it became largely a town of tourism and downtown Duluth was renovated to reflect this.
These days Duluth’s economy is mostly fueled by tourism, banking and healthcare. Almost $500 million are spent each year by tourists while the two hospitals in Duluth alone make up 8,000 jobs.
