Countdown to Earth Day: Shred, Recycle, Save Trees!

A University of Southern Indiana study showed the benefits of every 2,000 pounds of recycled paper can include saving: 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kw of energy, and 7,000 gallons of water. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) indicated that of all of the 2018 municipal solid waste (MSW) generated, “approximate 69 million tons were recycled, and 25 million tons were composted. Together, 93.9 million tons of MSW were recycled and composted, equivalent to a 32.1 percent recycling and composting rate.” This year, Healthcare Waste Management is again participating in a countdown to Earth Day by taking a look at recycling paper products and how our secure paper shredding services contribute to environmental efforts.

Using a document destruction service not only protects important and invaluable information and assets but increases the ability to have a better carbon footprint. Each day, confidential documents are dropped into our secure, locked consoles that are located in offices, medical facilities, and buildings in our service area. Our licensed and trained drivers go into the facilities based on an agreed-upon schedule, empty the consoles and transport them to for secure destruction. The entire process guarantees 100% confidentiality and safety. Upon destruction Healthcare Waste Management supplies our customers with a notice of destruction date that confirms safety and security.

Using a “pierce-and-tear” method of shredding ensures that no two pieces of paper are exactly the same. The final phase of the process securely transports the shredded paper to a paper mill for recycling. The pieces of paper are transformed in a pulp and the paper is additionally separated for recycling. All ink and any other imperfections are removed during a screening process and the paper pulp is then ready to be transformed into new paper products.

Healthcare Waste Management uses locked consoles that can hold around 100 pounds of paper. Using a formula of a weekly pickup, this equals 5,200 pounds of paper per year, which equates to saving around 40 trees!

Our commitment to safety and security includes our passion to contribute to better ecology. Using our Healthcare Waste Management document destruction services is a way to do something good for the planet.
