The Hospitals in Appleton

The St. Elizabeth Hospital was founded in 1899, services the east side and is located on Oneida Street. The hospital was originally founded and run by four women from a St. Louis church and only had 11 beds. Nowadays the hospital has more than 350 beds and is an accredited level 3 trauma center. Specializing in heart care and cancer treatment, this hospital is still amazing at treating every other specialty.

The other hospital in the city is ThedaCare Regional was previously known as Appleton Medical Center and was opened in 1959. In 1949 Wisconsin State started fundraising for almost 13 years to fund the hospital. These days the hospital is the area leader in orthopedic care and has a fantastic cafeteria that serves proper fresh meals daily.

Economy of Appleton

These days the largest employers of Appleton are the two hospitals, Thrivent Financial, the Appleton School District, and the local electric company Miller Electric. In the 1800s though, the paper industry was actually the largest industry in the city. The early success of the paper industry was a large reason for early migration to the city as many people were easily able to find jobs. After WW1 the city shifted from newspaper manufacturing to more specialty production such as tissues, toilet paper, napkins and blueprint paper.

Appleton is a city in Outagamie (mostly), Calumet, and Winnebago counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. One of the Fox Cities, it is situated on the Fox River, 30 miles southwest of Green Bay and 100 miles north of Milwaukee. Appleton is the county seat of Outagamie County.
